Color in Culture

Hieronymus Bosch’s “Adoration of the Magi”

In European paintings, colors have a symbolic character. The Magi in red portray royalty and purple of Mary's gown is a symbol of royalty.
Color symbolism vary dramatically between cultures. Colors evoke emotions and have positive and negative connotations. The traditional Chinese wedding shouts red while funeral are drapped in white. On the other spectrum, the Western wedding is white and funeral is in black.
